When Austin launched the J40 pedal car in the 1950s, it was designed to be suitable for a wide-range of ages and can even be used as a two-seater – its seat being wide enough to accommodate two small children.
Will my child be able to pedal a J40?
We are often asked what age child best suits an Austin J40 pedal car, and we always suggest the optimum age for effective pedalling is between 4 and 10 years old, but this can vary depending on torso and leg length. Some can pedal younger, and some older, but this is a good guide for anyone considering the purchase of an Austin pedal car.
As an additional guide, we suggest a minimum inside leg measurement (with shoes off) of 45cm and a maximum of 67cm for comfortable pedalling.
Can the J40 be adjusted for size?
There is some slight adjustment available too, as the pedal box on a classic J40 can be moved slightly back and forth, allowing for shorter and longer leg lengths. This adjustment, while relatively simple to undertake, does require some tools and a few moments of your time.
Where can I test a J40 with my child?
For complete peace of mind, please arrange a viewing where your child can try a J40 for size. We can offer this service in Salisbury and Bicester.
When testing a J40 for size, take note of your child’s knees (whilst pedalling) against the bottom edge of the dashboard. This panel is fixed, and offers no adjustment and, for the longer-legged pedaller it can sometimes hinder effective use
